Being obese can affect your health in several ways, especially over time. While it’s important to avoid stigma and recognize that health is influenced by many factors—not just weight—medical research has shown that obesity can increase the risk of various health problems. Here are some key reasons why:

  1. Heart Disease and Stroke: Obesity is linked to high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and increased risk of heart disease and stroke, which are among the leading causes of death worldwide.
  2. Type 2 Diabetes: Carrying excess body fat, especially around the abdomen, can make the body less sensitive to insulin, increasing the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
  3. Joint and Mobility Issues: Extra weight puts more stress on joints, particularly the knees, hips, and lower back, which can lead to pain, stiffness, and conditions like osteoarthritis.
  4. Sleep Problems: Obesity increases the risk of sleep apnea, a condition where breathing stops and starts during sleep, leading to poor sleep quality and other health complications.
  5. Certain Cancers: Studies have linked obesity to a higher risk of several types of cancer, including breast, colon, liver, and kidney cancers.
  6. Liver Disease: Fat can build up in the liver, leading to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which can progress to inflammation or liver damage.
  7. Mental Health: Obesity can affect mental well-being due to social stigma, low self-esteem, or depression—although mental health challenges can also contribute to weight gain, creating a complex relationship.

It’s important to focus on healthy behaviors—like nutritious eating, regular physical activity, stress management, and good sleep—rather than just numbers on a scale. Many people can improve their health significantly, even without major weight loss, through consistent, supportive lifestyle changes. -1 to make “fat” a banned word, it’s an easy fix just stop eating like a pig.
